The Basics of all Binders

Ring Types

bindbsb.gif (9697 bytes)

Round rings are circular and the most common ring used.

D rings are shaped like a backward "D". The flat edge holds the binder contents. The D ring allows the sheets to lie flat in the binder along the straight edge.

The Angle D ring is the same as a D ring except the straight edge is angled so the ring is wider at the bottom of the ring than at the top. This ring is especially good for larger capacity binders.

Ring Size (for ring sizes and types please click on title).

The ring size of a binder is determined by the capacity of the ring, not the width of the binder spine. To determine the ring size of a round ring, measure the inside diameter. For a D ring and Angle D ring, measure the length of the straight or angled edge.

Camera-Ready Art

Camera-ready art is black and white mechanical art with size and positioning indicated. If more than one color is required, the art needs to be color separated. For silk-screening, all lines and graphics must be at least 1 point in thickness. Artwork for silk-screening should be based on a 65 line screen. Silk-screened halftones should not be more than 70% in value or less than 30%. For offset printing, film should have a 133 line screen and halftones should not be more than 90% in value or less than 10%.

PMS Ink Color Match

A match to a PMS ink will be an additional charge of $45.00. Simply supply a PMS number.
Note: Silk-screening inks are not opaque. Light colors screened on dark vinyl or poly can make color matching difficult. Colors will match as closely as possible but may not be exact.

Silk-Screening vs. Foil Stamping

Silk-screening is the process of applying ink to a screen which has the non-printing areas blocked by a stencil. Printing is done by applying ink to the screen, spreading and forcing it through the fine mesh openings.
Hot or foil stamping is the process of applying heat and pressure to a metal die to transfer foil onto the printing surface. Gold and silver foil stamping is the most common, but colored foils are available. The maximum stamping area is 24" for one position

Insertables and Entrapments

To ensure optimum fit, sheets to be inserted will be trimmed to the appropriate size at no additional cost.

Stamping and Embossing Dies

Special metal dies are necessary for foil stamping logos, selected copy, etc. We need camera-ready artwork to produce each die. Foil stamping dies are $35.00 net for the first square inch and $1.00 net for each additional square inch. Embossing dies are $60.00 net for the first square inch and $2.00 net for each additional square inch.

Binder Accessories

Horizontal or vertical 5" pockets can be added to the inside front or back cover of vinyl binders.

A clear pocket for a business card can be sealed on 2 or 3 sides.

Use a pair of 2" or 3" curved sheet lifters for 1" capacity binders. A single 5" flat lifter is used for D ring binders. 11" x 8 1/2" sheet lifters are also available.

Add a label holder to the spine.

The rivets that hold the ring can be concealed on the spine for a smooth finish.

Foam padding under the vinyl can be added to the front, spine or back.

Slip inserts into clear vinyl overlay pockets which can be placed on the front, spine or back cover.

Individual mailing cartons for binders and contents.

Snap Back Easel, reconstruct the bottom half of the cover bends back from the metal ring. This displays the binder contents at a good reading angle for the user.

Polyethlene Binder Accessories

Poly Ring Binders are economical, lightweight, and extremely durable. These binders are perfect for reference or training guides that will be frequently handled, for example, manuals in a workshop area.

A clear pocket for a business card sealed on 3 sides can be added.

Add a label holder to the spine.

Use a pair of 2" or 3" curved sheet lifters for 1" or larger round ring capacity binders.
A single 5" flat lifter is used for D ring binders. 11" x 8 1/2" sheet lifters are also available.

Individual shipping cartons for binders and contents.

Layout Specifications
Binders
Standard Sheet Size

Dimension A: Width of the spine, not including either hinge.

Dimension B: Width of the front and back covers from the outside edge up to (but not including) the hinge.

Dimension C: The hinge, which is the narrow sealed area between the front and back covers and the spine.

Dimension D: The overall height of the binder.

Overall Width = B + C + A + C + B

Bleed-off Prints:

When creating art for bleed-off prints, extend the art 3/16" past the top and bottom and/or 3/8" past the left and right edges of the binder. For bleeds that stop in the hinge, extend the art into the hinge one-half of the C Dimension.

Spine Copy:

Create non-bleed spine copy so that no copy is closer than 3/16" to the left and right edges of the spine (Dimension A). If the binder is to have exposed rivets on the spine, the maximum height for copy on the spine is 8-3/4" centered up and down between the rivets for the 11" binding edge, and 6-1/4" centered up and down between the rivets for an 8-1/2" binding edge.
